Introduction
H I G H W A Y E N G I N E E R I N G is the
study of the process of design and
construction of efficient and safe highways
and roads. This field that originated from the
discipline of civil engineering became
important in the 20th century, with highway
engineering standards constantly being
improved. Concepts such as grade, surface
texture, visibility, as well as horizontal bend
radii and vertical slope related to design
speed are important elements in the field of
highway engineering. Apart from the design

network of highways.
The design policy standards used in the United States are typically based on
publications of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officers as well as research declared by the Transportation Research Board, the
