3.4 Safety Precautions
- Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.
- Never work alone in the laboratory. No student may work in the laboratory
without the presence of the instructors.
- Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not
use laboratory glassware as containers for food or beverages
- Be alert and proceed with caution at all times in the laboratory. Notify the
instructor immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe
- Labels and equipment instructions must be read carefully before use. Set
up and use the equipment as directed by your instructor
3.5 Procedures
- Collect soil samples from the desired depth.
- Record the can and lid number.
- Determine and record the mass of an empty, clean, and dry moisture can
with its lid (MSC)
- Place the moist soil in the can and secure the lid. Determine and record the
mass of the moisture can (now containing the moist soil) with the lid
(MCMS).
- Place the samples in a drying oven with the lids off, and dry them to
o
constant mass at approximately 105 C for 24 hours.
- Remove the samples from the oven, replace the covers, and place in the
desiccators containing active desiccant Remove the can. Carefully but
securely, replace the lid on the moisture can using gloves, and allow it to
cool to room temperature. Determine and record the mass of the moisture
can and lid (containing the dry soil) (MCDS).
- Weigh the samples when cool.
- Empty the cans of all soil and reweigh to obtain the tare mass.
