are some smaller hospitals in small towns but none in the rural and remote

               areas.

               1.2 PRIMARY AND PREVENTIVE CARE

Healthcare services are categorised into three main levels, namely:

               a) Primary and preventive care

               b) Secondary care

               c) Tertiary care.

Primary care is preventive wellness care and is administered by the

general practitioners, paediatricians or nurse practitioners. The objective

at this level is to decrease the risk of the illness in individuals within the

community setting. The services may include the following:

                    General physical examination

                    Patient education
                    Vaccinations

                    Diet moderation

                    Exercise programs

                    Stress reduction techniques.

The primary goal is to detect the illness in its early stage and expedite

treatment to prevent further deterioration of the illness. The delivery is at
the general practitioner clinic or health clinic or government outpatient

               clinics.
