MEDICAL AND HEALTH INSURANCE
1.1.2 STRUCTURE OF THE MHCS
The healthcare system in Malaysia is regulated by the Ministry of Health
and the public and private systems co-exist side by side.
The government provides a comprehensive range of services including
health promotion, disease prevention, curative and rehabilitative care
delivered through clinics and hospitals while special institutions provide
long-term care as well as other related health services.
The private sector provides health services mainly in the urban areas
through the private physician clinics and private hospitals. There are also
private diagnostic laboratories and private ambulance services.
Non-governmental organisations also provide some health services for
particular groups. In addition, traditional medicines such as Malay and
Chinese practices and products are used by the general sections of the
population.
The healthcare system structure provides for service pertaining to:
• primary and preventive care, which is delivered by the government
clinics, health centres and private general practitioners
• secondary and tertiary care, which is delivered by the public
hospitals and private hospitals.
1.1.3 AIMS, PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE MHCS
