MEDICAL AND HEALTH INSURANCE
1.1.1 HISTORY OF THE MALAYSIA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM (MHCS)
The history of healthcare in Malaysia dates back to before the
independence period. In the early pre-colonial days, medical care was
confined to traditional remedies among the local populations of Malays,
Chinese and other ethnic groups.
With the advent of colonialism, western medical practice came into the
country. Hospitals were built. However, apart from providing medical care,
one of the main concerns then was to counter infectious diseases such as
malaria, beri-beri and other dangerous infectious tropical diseases from
possible spreading.
Since the country's independence, there has been a radical transformation
in the healthcare system in Malaysia. The Government's focus has been on
improving the socio-development of the rural population. At the time of
independence in 1957, there were only 65 hospitals in Malaysia, but by
2012, Malaysia had 132 Ministry of Health hospitals. The Ministry of
Health continues to grow with the increase of health facilities each year.
The focus of the ministry is more extensive in providing equitable,
accessible, and quality health facilities.
With economic development and the improvement of health status of the
population, the mortality and morbidity has shifted from communicable
diseases to non-communicable diseases. However, communicable diseases
still remain a concern.
Evidently, from the healthcare system development, the Government has
also been trying to promote Malaysia as a healthcare destination both
regionally and internationally.
