               1.0      QUANTITY SURVEYING PROFESSION



               1.1      Background of Quantity Surveying Profession



                        ❑     A  quantity  surveyor plays  a  crucial  role  in the  construction
                              industry.  "Cost  engineers,"  "cost  planners,"  and  "cost

                              controllers"  are  all  terms  used  to  describe  Quantity
                              Surveyors.


                        ❑     A  quantity  surveyor  is  a  professional  that  specializes  in
                              estimating  the  cost  of  construction  projects.  Quantity

                              surveyors  will  use  their  expertise  to  take  off  the  proposed
                              building's  quantity  and  assess  the  cost  of  building  work

                              ranging  from  minor  renovations  to  major  construction

                              projects.

                        ❑     Developers,  Architects,  Contractors,  Building  Owners,  and

                              Government Bodies and Agencies are all common clients for
                              Quantity  Surveyors.  Cost  planning,  cost  management,

                              Contract  Administration,  project  procurement,  feasibility
                              studies,  and  asset  financial  management  are  all  services

                              provided by quantity surveyors.

                        ❑     The  objectives  of  a  Quantity  Surveyor  are  to  reduce  or

                              eliminate project cost and maximizing the value of a proposed
                              project.  Quantity  Surveyors  increase  value  for  money  to  a

                              developer or end user client or increase profit margins for the

                              primary  contractor  or  subcontractor,  while  still  meeting  the
                              agreed-upon  standards  and  staying  within  the  contract

                              schedule.
