1.3 Career Prospect and The Future Career for Quantity
Surveyor
❑ Quantity surveyors work for construction companies,
engineering consulting businesses, property developers,
public works departments, insurance companies, oil and gas
companies, mining companies, and heavy industries. They
can also enhance their careers by becoming project
managers, who are responsible for directing entire
construction projects.
❑ An assistant quantity surveyor (AQS) is a person who assists
a quantity surveyor (QS) on significant projects. AQS may be
assigned to a ring-fenced portion of a huge project as well as
overseeing some smaller projects. Before becoming a
professional QS, an AQS may need to work as an AQS for up
to three years.
❑ Graduates must register with the Malaysian Board of Quantity
Surveyors to become qualified quantity surveyors (BQSM).
After that, a graduate must find work that is supervised by the
Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia for the next two years
(RISM).
❑ A registered provisional quantity surveyor must maintain
logbooks and records to document his or her progress and
meet with his or her supervisor on a regular basis. There is
also a need for a particular number of hours of professional
development, and the programme culminates with an
evaluation interview.
