MEDICAL AND HEALTH INSURANCE
for nursing home care. The concept of insuring long-term care has little
appeal and is relatively new in the current socio-economic environment.
The long-term care insurance benefits offered are generally an allowance,
as follows:
Daily allowance for home care on Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
ADL are functions or activities that are performed by individuals without
assistance and allow personal independence in everyday living. If the
Insured suffers from a medical condition, which is subsequently confirmed
by an appropriate consultant or specialist to have directly attributed to the
loss of independent existence lasting for a minimum period, for example,
of 6 months and resulting in a permanent inability by the Insured to
perform at least three (3) of the Activities of Daily Living (ADL), either with
or without the use of mechanical equipment, special devices or other aids
and adaptations. The term 'permanent' means beyond the hope of
recovery with current medical knowledge and technology.
Examples of Activities of Daily Living include:
Transfer - getting in and out of a chair without requiring physical
assistance
Mobility - ability to move from room to room without requiring any
physical assistance
Continence - ability to voluntarily control bowel and bladder
functions such as to maintain personal hygiene
Dressing - putting on and taking off all necessary items of clothing
without requiring assistance from another person
Bathing/Washing - ability to wash in the bath or shower (including
getting in or out of the bath or shower) or wash by any other means;
