the first consultation, for this benefit to be payable and must result in
hospital confinement for the treatment of the medical condition
diagnosed.
However, it could be a good cost containment measure to adopt for
certain surgical procedures like tonsillectomy, varicose veins, and others,
for insurers to contain abuse or utilisation review.
MEDICAL EVACUATION AND REPATRIATION
Medical evacuation and repatriation insurance is usually a supplementary
cover attached to an individual PMI policy or with a travel medical
insurance policy.
The assistance given is generally classified as:
a) International assistance, where it covers events resulting from accident,
illness or death when the Insured is travelling outside the country for a
period not exceeding a number of days, which is usually 90 days
consecutively on any one trip.
b) Domestic assistance, where it covers events resulting from accident,
illness or death when the Insured is travelling more than 100km from the
place of residence in the home country and not exceeding a number of
days, which is usually 90 days consecutively on any one trip.
The benefits are generally as follows:
• Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
• Repatriation of mortal remains
• Emergency reunion
• Travel assistance services
